Vitrinite Reflectance of Coal and Dispersed Organic Matter (DOM)

  • Reflectance of organoclasts is a standard tool in maturation studies for petroleum source rocks and coals
  • Individuals in our team has over 40 years experience, not only in rocks where vitrinite is present (late Devonian and younger) but also in old rocks where no vitrinite is present
  • We prefer to use maximum reflectance measurements obtained using plane polarized light and rotating the stage 360°
  • Random reflectance measurements provided on request
  • State of the art, precision German microscopes are used to examine polished grain mounts
  • All present organoclasts measured including, vitrinite, liptinite, representative inertinites, bitumen, graptolites, chitinozoans and colonial algae such as Gloecapsomorpha etc
  • Fluorescence observations are routinely carried out
  • Visual estimation of organic matter type and abundance is made
  • Report includes selected photomicrographs
  • ERC staff hold International Committee of Coal and Organic petrology (ICCP) accreditation for vitrinite reflectance of dispersed organic matter
